Tunis had a tram system that was abandoned in 1960. Trams returned to the city in 1985.
The new system was built by a German consortium and 134 new double-articulated trams closely following the German "Stadtbahn" model were delivered between 1984 and 1997 in three batches by Siemens/Duewag. The 30 meter long bi-directional trams run in pairs.

For the vehicles required for the extension of the network Alsthom from France won the tender and 30 Citadis low-floor vehicles type 302 entered service between September 2007 and March 2008. These trams have five sections and are also coupled into pairs. They only have one driver cabin and are coupled back-to-back. More Citadis trams were ordered to bring the total to 55.

The network currently has 5 lines. Information can be found on the company website: http://www.transtu.tn/
