Little is known about bus transport in Libya and the current (2014) situation has probably halted most bus transport. Tourism has always been limited and the few coaches were imported. Public transport was/is in the hands of the government owned GPTC (General Public Transport Company).

Bus assembly has taken place of Ikarus buses on IVECO-chassis between 1984 and 1988. In 1996 the Libyan Truck & Bus Co was created as a joint venture between IVECO and the Libyan government.
