General information
Suriname is the middle one of the three Guyana’s on South America’s north coast. It became independent from The Netherlands in 1975. The Dutch influence is still strong in culture and language, also because of the many Suriname people living in The Netherlands.
In the bus scene, the Dutch influence could also be found, though only through the many secondhand imports. Nowadays, however, midibuses of Japanese origin dominate the market, with some new Chinese and Brazilian buses plus random secondhand buses from among others French Guyana.
As driving is on the left-hand side of the road the Japanese vehicles have the advantage of being already built the “right” way.
