Urban buses in Aleppo (Halab)

Aleppo is Syria's second largest city with over 2 million inhabitants and is the capital of the governorate with the same name. It is one of the oldest cities in the world and has an intersting old centre with a large soukh and citadel. It is also a very busy city with a rather confusing layout and very dense traffic.
Taxis and buses provide public transport in Aleppo. Recent privatisation of part of the bus network has led to the creation of new companies. From around 2007 onwards many new buses were brought into service, both by the government company and private operators. All new buses are chinese while all old buses in Aleppo appear to be Yugoslavian built FAP Dubrava on MAN or Mercedes chassis. None of the old buses carries registration plates. The chinese buses belonging to the main goverment company also lack registration plates, all other new buses do carry registrations. Companies, or buses in certain colors, are assigned to specific routes.
