Buses in Sri Lanka

Buses play a major role in transport in Sri Lanka. SLTB (Sri Lanka Transport Board) is the national company but many private companies exist too.
British influence has long been apparent in Sri Lankan buses and in the aftermath of the tsunami secondhand UK buses were donated. However, the vast majority of buses are Lanka Ashok-Leyland and TATA buses of Indian origin, assembled in Sri Lanka. A recent attempt at building a Sri Lankan bus was the Colomborider, based on the Optare Solo. Also, Duple-Metsec bodywork was imported and assembled locally. There are several local bus body builders, though models generally follow the straight-forward designs known from India.
