Tunisia's oldest bus builder is STIA, Société Tunisienne d'Industrie Automobile, which was founded in 1961 as a state enterprise. From 1964 to 1973 the company assembled imported CKD-vehicles. From 1974 to 1986 two Van Hool licenced coach and bus bodies were produced and from 1987 onwards STIA also built its own models though until 2000 the two basic models were still the old Van Hool-designs. Between 1983 and ca 1986 the FIAT 370 coach was imported from Italy and probably finished by STIA as it was also badged as STIA. Between 1988 and 1993 STIA assembled 292 Ikarus 280 articulated buses (see imported vehicles page) and from 1997-2004 435 Ikarus 283 articulated chassis were bodied. Around 1995 an agreement with Mercedes-Benz resulted in a new coach using a Gangloff body. The Mercedes coaches, with a new body model by 2005, were destined at private coach operators. For the government bus operators buses and coaches were built on IVECO, later Irisbus, chassis. Until around 2000 this was the sturdy AP160, from around 2000 the EuroRider. Only around 2007 some buses were built on articulated Mercedes-Benz Brasil chassis. By 2005 the Tunisian government started a privatisation proces which in 2009 led to the sale of STIA to the Marbrouk group which changed the company name to ICAR, Société les Industries de Carrossage Automobile. Being a state enterpirse STIA's main clients have long been the government bus operators. Only around 1995 the private coach market, then dominated by SETCAR on Volvo and to a lesser extend Mercedes-Benz chassis, was entered trough the collaboration with Mercedes-Benz and Gangloff.
