Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company Limited (AUMTCO) was established by the then Ministry of Federal Capital Territory now the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in 1984 as Abuja Service (ABS) and later registered on 13th November, 1989 as Abuja Urban Mass Transport Company Limited, under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 1990. The company is part of the Abuja Investments Company Limited; Group (from company site)..
When visited in 2005, the company was in a rather sorry state. Out of a said fleet of 75 busses only some 7 were operational. The fleet consisted of a strange mix of Mercedes-Benz trucks with local bodywork, a Blue Bird and a Mercedes-Benz -Thomas. Also present were three Russian PAZ buses that were lettered for the Federal Mass Transport Company and two unregistred Jeepneys from the Phillipines.
Around 2010 the company modernised and expanded its fleet with modern TATA and Ashok-Leyland buses. April 2014 100 more new buses, Chinese Yutong, were added. Most buses are red, but there are also blue TATA and green Yutong buses. The company was hard hit by a bomb attack in a bus station on April 14, 2014.
