The Greater Cairo Bus Company started in 1979 and was part of a plan to create several separate bus companies in Cairo, which eventually never got any further than the GCBC. CTA and GCBC alway collaborated closely and in 2009 CTA took over the assets of GCBC though buses are still running in the light blue colours.

The first buses of CTA were Ward buses. Those were still in the red colours also used by CTA. Beginning of the 1980's new buses were NASR 811/871. Those were in a white and blue colour scheme in order to distinguish them from the CTA buses. During the 1990's the colours were changed to sky blue with stripes. The GCBC numbered its buses in chronological order, starting with 1 and arriving at the 1400-series around 2005.
