Buses in Bukavu

The capital of South Kivu province, on the southern shore of Lake Kivu, was founded over a 100 years ago and is, despite the delapidated state of many buildings and roads, a pictoresque and colourful city. Public transport is by minibus, taxi and mototaxi. Boats of various sizes cross Lake Kivu to Goma and smaller places along the lake. No surfaced roads go from Bukavu to any other major city, only to some smaller places a dozen kilomters away. The only decent road access is from Rwanda. The only cross-border bus service is a midibus connecting to the once or twice daily RwandAir flights from Kamembe airport, some 5 kilometers from Bukavu, to Kigali.
