South Africa had a flourishing bus industry, which was partly supported by the Apartheid policies which forced people to travel from townships and homelands to work. After the end of Apartheid in 1994 the demand for buses was sharply reduced, aggravated by the taxi-wars which meant the end for many organised bus services. Many long established bus builders, most notably BUSAF, dissappeared. The trend has reversed and the market has grown. While there are still some smaller local bus builders most of the market has been taken over by foreign companies: MAN, Marcopolo, Busscar, and later MCV. A local company making a comeback is Busmark 2000.
