The Nigerian bus industry is, in comparison to the size of the country and the population, underdeveloped. There is and has been local assembly but the local bus body building industry is mainly focussing on extremely basic models on truck chassis (as can also be seen on the Abuja pages). Secondhand imported buses, mainly from Europe, play a role with smaller bus companies. New imports as seen in 1990 were from the UK, Belgium (Van Hool) and some East European buses (TAM, Ikarus) and Brazilian Mercedes buses. In 2004 the most important new coach models were teh Brazilian Marcopolo and Busscar. On the new busway system in Lagos a variety of imported buses from India (Ashok-Leyland), South Korea (Hyundai) and the Brazilian buses can be found.

Known bus builders in Nigeria are Ezeigwe (bodies) and Burem (midibuses on Volkswagen basis).
