General information

Thailand has a rail network and an important network of long distance buses. The capital Bangkok has invested large sums in the development of urban rail networks over the past two decades, to combat the horrendous traffic jams. The Bangkok bus network is operated by MBTA and private companies.
Buses in Thailand are mostly locally built by dozens of local workshops copying designs. Often chassis names are also “invented”, disguising a cheap chassis with a respected name. Long distance coaches are often elaboratly decorated and their design tend to be full of ornate elements, often more decorative than practical. City buses are more straightforward and at the lower end of the market the open “song-thaw” vehicles are just very basic.
