General information

Ivory Coast has a thriving bus industry with many companies/cooperatives operating large buses between the cities. There were several local bus building companies: Carici, Ebro and Geritech and complete imported buses were rare, apart from the SOTRA buses. However, after the recent turmoil most large buses are now secondhand (European) or new (Chinese) imports, with locally built buses mainly seen for transport of personnel. Abidjan has a large semi-public company, SOTRA, which exists since 1961 and is the large survivor of the municipal companies set up as public private partnerships by Renault in West Africa during the 1960’s/1970’s. The company went through important ups and down but recently modernised its fleet with a large number of TATA -Marcopolo buses. The fleet has some 700 buses and some 20 boats that ply the lagune. Minibuses, called “Gbaka” supplement the urban bus system. A railway runs from Abidjan all the way to Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso.
